Payet and Lanzini together
I have become concerned about the Payet/Lanzini partnership. Firstly it has produced very little this season, in fact I would go as far as saying that a goal has not been scored by their tippy/tappy football. The consequences of them playing amongst themselves is costing us other opportunities and is bloody frustrating.

Neither of the fight back for a lost ball and neither really challenge when an opposition player in on the ball. Are they both a luxury and can we afford this luxury?

One of them maybe but the two of them mean we are often carrying them with a negative impact on the rest of the team.

Your thoughts please?

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
They play best when within 5-10 yards of each other which was easier to do on the UP pitch.

The bigger pitch combined with the new positions means they are less effective. They link up alot more when we play 4-2-3-1 and we need them to do that if we are going to win games with our current ST situation

Certainly think it needs addressing and I commend you on your post Banjo.

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
I disagree. They are responsible for some the rare spells of good football we play. When they link up I see the beginning of confidence.

The problem last night was sitting deep the whole second half on a one goal lead against a team we are miles better than. I hate to say it but Bilic again was at fault here.

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
I also think with the 3-4-2-1 that we try to play Lanzini has not got a fucking clue what he is doing

Too many times he is not in the hole to break lines and is instead behind the ball where Obiang always is and most of the time Noble. This leads to Caroll being isolated up top where actually you need someone within 5 yards to buzz around the knock downs or hold up play

With 3 central midfileders just in front of 3 CB's you have 6 players that cant affect you offensively......thats not good enough against Burnley at home

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
Any player who has the mantra 'get it to Payet' as soon as he receives the ball is okay with me.

Payet did a lot of chasing lost causes and tracking back last night which was great to see as he doesn't even do that for France.

We're as lucky as fuck to have a couple of playerss like Lanz and Dimi. Just watch West Ham when one of them is injured and you'll see why.

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
Lanzini should be playing off carroll, but instead plays off payet. Given he's doing a bad job of playing off carroll, he should be dropped for ayew, who I suspect will be better at it.

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
The two of these yesterday were beautiful to watch. The passing, movement, control, anticipation was exceptional. Watching them together was like watching Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers at their peak. Add in Obiang passing too and we had the makings of something special.

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
Said during the match that Lanzini tended to be closest to Carroll almost as a second striker but that's not his game. He isn't a natural at reading knock ons and tends to stand still and then run for the ball.
He is a central midfielder who can carry the ball.
Seems to be part of our problem at the moment .... the parts of the jigsaw don't seem to fit and we don't play together naturally.
Antonio is the one that probably is the most natural at running onto any flicks by Carroll.
How we fit it all together I don't know.

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
We weren't too great prior to Lanzini going off but we had the ball. We really struggled when he did. He wouldn't have been who I'd have taken off.

Him and Payet work well together - Burnley worked as a unit of 4/5 when either had the ball, it was a difficult night for them both.

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
However effective they may be they're a dam sight better to watch than a considerable proportion of the turgid dogshit that has been served up in my 40 years of watching West Ham. And I happen to think that they are pretty effective.

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
We looked far more of a threat before Lanzini came off

I thought Payet & Lanzini were just starting to link up well for the first time in ages, just before Lanzini got subbed

Neither has been in sparkling form & their shooting this season has been particularly poor

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
Tend to think the close passing game is worth it. Yes it can be ineffective for periods, and last night it took away our pace in the first half when we could have punished Burnley. But it's good to watch (and I've watched some awful shit over the years from WH), and it usually makes for at least a few nice through balls for Antonio to chase on to either for himself or to swing in to the box.

Antonio is an absolute diamond. Playing with such a hard working, willing team mate must be a dream. I bet he's a decent 'keeper too. Probably drives everyone on a night out and makes perfect ribs at 2am.

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
I have no concerns what so ever about the Payet/Lanzini partnership.

They've not produced as much as last season simply because the whole squad have been fucking atrocious by comparison to last season.

To point only at a perceived lack of cohesion between these two is to miss the point completely, I'm afraid.

If we were playing with anything like the confidence of last year we wouldn't be having this discussion, would we?

good post. we'd be much better off with a pair of cloggers in midfield. fucking showboating cunts

Re: Payet and Lanzini together
Inthrink we have to go for slower passing at the new stadium as the pitch is bigger - Upton Park was small and you could go full pelt for longer.

It was frustrating at times last night though - payet and lanzini had to drop really deep to get the ball and we spent too long playing across the back three often with little movement ahead.

banjo.
Agree, the tippy tappy stuff was not working last night, with two many players to snuff it out, When a long ball to someone in space would have done, Asenal are good at it, but we are not at this point in time, Looks good over the local park though.

Sven Roeder 11:42 Thu Dec 15
Re: Payet and Lanzini together
The two of them pass together well but they need a quick alert striker to play in at the end of it.
Which is why we need SAHKO back ASAP.

The Ghost of Braderz 11:51 Thu Dec 15
Re: Payet and Lanzini together
Banjo, I think you need to look a little deeper.

Midfield "tippy tappy" play, which quite clearly gets the ball forward in a very effective and beautiful manner, needs to reach a point where a player can work a shot. Either from 20 or 2 yards. The problem is, there is nobody they can set up. Andy Carroll was brilliant last night, but really doesn't suit us given the quality of our other players. Every time we went forward last night he dropped deep or went to hang up at the far post. He isn't capable of hitting a shot on target from tight areas, nor can he receive it and set it for an on coming midfielder.

Creswell, Lanzini and Payet are not the problem.
It's not having a striker.
